Mornings can be really crazy! The alarm doesn’t go off, the kids don’t want to get up, there’s no time to eat breakfast before the bus comes or they’re just not ready to eat. Or maybe your teenager grabs a can of soda and a candy bar on the way to school. If this sounds like your house, we have good news for you.
Breakfast is available at school! Take advantage of this option to ensure your child eats a nutritious breakfast. Recent studies show a link between nutrition and learning. A nutritious breakfast helps students be more alert so they can actively participate in class. Breakfast has vitamins and nutrients for a strong and healthy body.
Breakfast at school is affordable too. A full breakfast costs less than convenience store items. If you qualify for free and reduced price meals, you also qualify for the breakfast program, with no additional paperwork. If you must pay, you’ll find that breakfast is a bargain as it only costs $1.50. Nowhere else will you find a balanced breakfast at such a low cost.
So take advantage of this opportunity to start the day on the right foot. Your child will find breakfast at school provides not only a nutritious meal but also a relaxed atmosphere for socializing with friends and siblings.

What is the school breakfast program?
The School Breakfast Program is a federally assisted meal program operating in our schools. The SBP started in 1966 as a pilot program, and was made a permanent program by Congress in 1975. Participation in this program has slowly but steadily grown over the years, nationally serving 14.57 million children in 2016.
We must serve breakfast meals meeting Federal nutrition requirements, and offer free or reduced price breakfasts to all eligible children.
In Minnesota ALL KINDERGARTEN students receive FREE breakfast at school regardless of their eligibility.
We allow ample time for all students who want to eat breakfast at school, before heading up to class.
Be sure to talk to your children about the importance of starting their day off with a nutritional meal. Studies show over and over again, the brain needs fuel in order to learn and stay focused in school. Eating school breakfast is an easy way to fuel up!
If you have any questions about the breakfast program please reach out to Collen Betts, Food Service Manager at colleen.betts@duluthedison.com.
Free and Reduced Priced Meal Applications: Vital for State Funding!
During the summer, your family received a Free and Reduced Price Meal Application. This application actually serves two purposes:
1. It helps the food service manager to determine if your family qualifies for full- price, reduced-price or free school meals. This includes full-price, reduced-price or free School Breakfast as well! School Breakfast is available to ALL students every school day as another option. Remember, ALL kindergarten students receive FREE School Breakfast regardless of your income eligibility.
2. The Application is also used to determine how much state funding our school receives for supplies like books, classroom furniture, and other school resources. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ALL FAMILIES COMPLETE AND RETURN THIS APPLICATION TO THE SCHOOL EACH YEAR.
