Meet the Oppelt Family!

We asked North Star parent, Dr. Kim Oppelt, why her family chose the Duluth Edison Charter Schools for their children and what they love most about the education their children receive.

We were looking for an extended school day, small class sizes, a focus on math and reading, and exposure to specialists every day. We were also drawn to the location of the school and the caring and inclusive attitude of teachers and staff. Had I known more about how my children would progress, I would have also chosen North Star because of the focus on ensuring students are reading at or above reading level and the opportunity for advanced courses.

My son Thomas’ (5th grade) favorite part of North Star Academy is the fun teachers and my daughter Maria (8th grade) enjoys all of the options to take unique elective classes. The friends they have both made will be lifelong. The Duluth Edison Schools have exceeded my expectations. My son needed a jumpstart to his reading in first and second grade and the team made it fun and exciting for him. My daughter and son are both now excelling and there are opportunities to continue at an advanced pace.

But above all, I feel like North Star has been a family to us. My kids are safe there and if anything should happen to them, I know that they are surrounded by caring adults who have their best interest at heart.

Duluth Edison Schools takes the time to get to know each student and understand how they learn. They provide fun, engaging activities throughout the school day and they put an emphasis on ALL subjects – from math and reading all the way through to art and music. The teachers and staff are second to none and have become family to us.

Thank you to the Oppelt family for sharing their story! If you would like to share why your family loves DECS, send a photo and a short paragraph about your family’s experience to Head of Schools, Bonnie Jorgenson at
